I suppose most of you in Anchorage and Wasilla have gotten these flyers in the mail by now. (Kenai, Soldotna and Fairbanks residents are excluded from this deal).

You can sign up for a $0.99 RFID chip which will allow you to fill up before paying if you don't have a credit card. It also enters you to possibly win various small prizes as you earn points for inside purchases and gas.

It appears to be a way to get more people into the store where they make more money. If you don't normally use Holiday, this deal isn't that great. If you DO use Holiday, it's probably worthwhile. The flyer comes with a 10-cent/gal. discount on up to 12 gallons (whoa - sarcasm). So after getting your $1.20 discount, you are ahead by a whopping $0.21 on your first fill-up.

See Big Honkin Rewards for details.

I love Fred Meyers, the serve me well.Apart from the 3 cents, you can earn 10 cents off a gal when you accrue 100 points on in store purchases.

I finally got around to using my "Big Honkin' Reward" at the Holiday at 36th & C. I sure picked the coldest day of the year. Hopefully my now-full tank won't bubble over when it warms up in my garage.

Anyway, I had to take my reward coupon inside and had to give the clerk my credit card while I went out and pumped my gas. I got my $1.20 (wow) discount and told the clerk I was gonna fire off a hot email if the website still said I was supposed to get 20-cents off up to $5. Sure enough - it still says 20-cents. Hardly worth the extra time to freeze my ass off. He said it had changed over way back on 12/01!

I stopped in at the Holiday at 36th & C today to use the restroom and buy something to drink. (naturally the mens' restroom was closed for renovations and they were calling the womens' restroom "unisex" - women beware!)

I pressed my BHR chip against the device at the cash register and it said I had a reward! So I went around the counter to print out whatever it was supposed to give me. Apparently I had a 1000 point reward which had a number of possible "prizes". The one at the top said, $.10 off per gallon up to 12 gallons.

SCAM SCAM SCAM

The website still touts 20 cents off up to $5.

I'm not even sure how I redeem this... I suppose I'll have to ask next time I fill up.

Hmmm...it says I'm still 876 points away from earning a 1000 point reward. Maybe that's till the next reward.

At least with the Fred Meyer or Carrs reward program I'm getting "rewarded" with a fuel discount for making purchases I would have made anyway.

I'm starting to think it's a scam as well. The website is very vague and there was no answer to my email.

I filled up my work truck today and got no discount.

I guess they want you to go in the store and print out your "awards", but I don't quite see how that would work for a gas discount.

I'll try one more time with my personal vehicle and see what kind of "awards" I get.

http://www.bighonkinrewards.com/bhr/Webpage.asp?State=AK

Now that I look at the website more closely, it seems to say if I buy 100 gallons of gas for $300 (10 points/gal of gas - 1000 points for award) I'll qualify for UP TO $5 off! Whee! I'll be able to buy my yacht!

Or I can buy $150 worth of stuff in the store. Still a poor deal.

I think the BHR program is like the Fred Meyer program - you have to spend $XX before you can get the discount. But I don't know what the amount is. The last time they had their discount on gas they had it posted on all their signs, but it didn't say you had to have earned the points FIRST, so I filled up my tank, (I had tapped my RFID chip tag at the pump) and got no discount, so I went inside to ask & he said I hadn't earned enough points yet. SO....I've never been back - I thought the sign was more than a little bit misleading!

Did you hold your tag up to the spot on the pump? You can check your account online.

Anyone know how this program works? I got my little RFID tag and got gas the other day, but didn't get a 20-cent discount.

Today I checked the printout inside and it said I'm 126 points away from earning "any 1000 point reward" - whatever THAT means.

Down below it says, Total Rewards earned to date: 1

I see since my first post on this that Kenai & Soldotna are now included in this program.

I don't normally use Holiday, but my the Shell station where I normally gas up my work truck jumped to over $3, so I stopped at the Holiday at 36th & C today.

While I was filling up, that annoying voice from the pumps said that the Big Honkin' Rewards discount was now $0.20/gallon up to 25 gallons. ($5 max). Not a bad deal, but only for a limited time.

I use BHR because I like HOliday's coffee and they have that BHR coffee club and the money I spend on the coffee also goes towards earning the next fuel discount.

And if you buy gift cards that is another 2% off of gas. It used to be 4% but you can still buy a $50 gift card for $49. That is like 10 cents off per gallon.

I agree - I've switched to Fred Meyer too. I think they have better deals and better produce. Plus like you said, it doesn't take long to get $100. in a month.

I was driving by the Holiday at 36th and C and the sign said, Free Activation B H R Today. Took me a while to figure out what that meant.

It's said that several days, so rush on down before they change the sign!

I just notice that Holiday has flung up a car wash at the 36th & C station.

Damn expensive though -- $8 for the cheapest wash (without buying gas). $7 if you also buy gas. Pfft.

(Master Station List corrected)

Holiday must be hurting for business. They have come out with all kinds of "rewards" plus they are the cheapest gas in Anchorage or Eagle River @ $2.69 here in Eagle River for the last week or so.

When they first came out with this program last month they gave the card (chip) out for free.
