Unemployment Climbed in 30 U.S. States, Fell in Nine

Bloomberg -- The state and local employment data are derived independently from the national statistics, which are typically released on the first Friday of every month. The state figures are subject to larger sampling errors because they come from smaller surveys, making the national figures more reliable, according to the government’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. State totals showed the economy gained 135,000 jobs in January.

Unemployment in the Detroit area, home to General Motors and Ford Motor Co., dropped to 15.3 percent from 16 percent in December, contributing to the decrease in Michigan’s jobless rate.

ronsimonil....

Unemployment figures are lagging indicators of economic health. Expect to see leading indicators such as bank stabilization and greater savings, stocks and bonds rising, retail sales increasing, greater exports, even manufacturing increasing...before unemployment makes a big pullback. We didn't get to this place overnight or even in a year, so it cannot be fixed overnight.

If this recession has taught us nothing else, it is States who formally put all of their eggs in 1 basket, depended on a single industry for prosperity....have suffered the most. Diversity in the future will be very important to keep us employed.

As to the stock markets: Money goes where money grows. Money isn't growing much if at all in the fixed-income markets, but interest paid is money coming in.

How can we say the economy is recovering when we still have this much unemployment?

The only good thing here is that GM & Ford are stating to bring people back to work. We should be happy for them. The rest of it is not so good for the rest of us.

The government dose use different unemployment data charts you can find them on the web, But they all tell the same story. There are to many people out of work.

There is more about GM & Ford if you read the whole story.

From what I remember reading Detroit has the hightest rate of government takeover already, even before all this interference by the Obama administration. That was one of the reasons their schools were failing so drastically.

Heard a lady on the radio lament that in the past 2 1/2 years, she submitted 600 applications for work and not a one of them was interested in an interview with her... My count is at almost 2 years with 400+ apps. submitted, all gov't jobs. This sh*t SUCKS!!!

Flawed reporting system in that it reports those ON unemployment rolls, not counting those who have exhausted their limits and are now either on public assistance or something (or nothing) else.

Yep! Kansas City got a taste of the depression. People moving out! They closed 29 of 61 schools! That saved them for awhile........

Just wait til the states start closing schools and laying off teachers. Where are all these jobs that the stimulus created. All it did if it did anything was to delay the laying off of government jobs.

What they don't want you to know is that none of them are really counting the number of people who are unemployed; they're counting the number of people getting Unemployment Benefits. If your benefits run out and you're still not working, you're considered to have "left the work force," and aren't counted any more. If they counted the millions of workers who've run out of Unemployment but are still looking, the numbers would be much worse. Of course, that's exactly why they don't count them.

What does this have to do with gas and oil prices? I guess I should have posted the story about the effects of the flu on monkeys? At least it gave the monkeys gas.

Demand for oil & gas is still weak, prices are artifically high. Getting the shaft from government and the oil pimps.

I guess the rise in unemployment contributed to the rise in gas prices?
