we could do a lot more to be less dependent on Pig Oil. But it would require a little effort and maybe some money...

I think @LQQKGAS has decided to reject reality and substitute his own.
How exactly does not driving like a madman with his hair on fire NOT save gas?
The faster you go, the more fuel you burn. It's not a conspiracy. It's physics.

Jimmy Carter says we are going to run out, and American have paid millions in court fines for driving faster that the artificial fuel saving speed of 55 MPG, All those fines should be refunded to the public for the Gov't lying to us all this time!

We need to import less from OPEC and to use less oil. If we can reduce demand, maybe prices may fall.

@sillywagon said, "But if all of our crude oil came from North America, a global supply disruption in the Middle East would effect price in the USA, but at least we would have supply. While those dependent on the unavailable Middle Eastern country supply, would have to ration."
I'm afraid there hasn't been a fuel ration since the 1970s and that was because OPEC embargoed the U.S. Nowadays in a global oil market, reduced oil supply just means higher prices for everyone. The oil will, flow one way or another, to the highest bidder. The only question is how much will it cost.

@itsjustme719 said, "A lot of domestic oil isn't kept here, it's sold elsewhere. Perhaps if that didn't happen, there would be no need to import oil from other countries."
The U.S. is a NET oil importer. Which menas we import more than we export. I agree that Big Oil shouldn't export U.S. produced oil AT ALL but they subscribe to the law of supply and demand. "Buy low and sell high." They sell our oil at a high price and buy someone else's oil at a lower price, then sell it to us at a high price, pocketing the difference and laughing all the way to the bank.

@texasvet, it won't matter if we localize our supply if Big Oil just exports it out of the country to the highest bidder, which is happening right now.
We have to bid for our own oil on the open market, while Big Oil lines their pockets.

Oil prices are set globally, but supply isn't. The more we localize our supply, the better we are strategically.

Funny, I always thought that during election season, the intelligent talk and high class debates would come out. Not the idiotic drivel. Guess the US just doesn't have the leaders it once did.
If the US imports 8 BILLION barrels per day, this world is in a LOT of trouble. HUGE.

8 BILLION BARRELS A DAY. Filling up terrorist pockets with cash so they can artfully craft the attacks on us and use it for "peaceful" nuclear energy development.

The author is way off in the daily amount of oil imported. 8 billion barrels would be enough to give every man, woman and child in the U.S. over 26 barrels of oil per day. At $80 a barrel, that would amount to over $233 TRILLION per year. That would mean were spending $778,000 per year to import oil for every man, woman and child in the U.S.
Again, the author obviously has their facts mistaken.
